The Election Security Exchange (Exchange) is committed to using artificial intelligence responsibly and in ways that strengthen, not shortcut, the quality of the resources and guidance we provide to election officials and administrators. Like much of the election community, we are actively exploring how AI can support election work, including the new risks it introduces. Engaging with these tools directly allows us to stay current on emerging technology, inform our security guidance, and model responsible practices for the officials and organizations we serve.
We use generative AI as a tool to support our work, not replace human judgment. AI may assist with drafting, editing, summarizing public information, and improving the accessibility of our materials. A human reviews, verifies, and takes responsibility for all content we produce and publish. We do not publish AI-generated content that has not been reviewed for accuracy and appropriateness by a person.
Security and data protection are central to how we operate, not just what we advise. We take care to ensure that sensitive, non-public, and partner-restricted information stays within our approved organizational environment and is never entered into outside AI tools. We are mindful of data privacy in all of our work and apply that same mindfulness to how we use AI.
AI may assist with drafting, editing, research, brainstorming, visualizing content, summarizing public information, and improving the accessibility of our materials. Because our work touches on sensitive election security topics, we are especially careful when AI contributes to materials that could inform official decisions or carry the weight of authoritative guidance. In all cases, subject matter review by an individual is required before anything is published or shared.
We recognize that AI systems have limitations, including the potential for errors, outdated information, or incomplete context. We do not treat AI outputs as authoritative sources, and we maintain clear provenance for all information included in our materials. The Exchange does not use AI to perform work that requires authoritative human judgment or specialized subject-matter expertise; those responsibilities remain fully human-led. We evaluate AI tools before use to ensure they meet our security and privacy expectations, and we welcome feedback from partners if any concerns arise.
